Day 11 of 100 Days of Hope

The Power of Music to Lift the Soul

Music has always been one of my greatest loves. It’s not just about notes or rhythms — it’s about connection, healing, and expression. I’ve found that when I’m in a funk, music is one of the quickest ways to shift my energy. Sometimes I play to release what I’m feeling in the moment. Other times I let music carry me into relaxation, meditation, or even joy I didn’t know I needed.

Every week, I get the gift of teaching music to elementary kids. Watching their eyes light up as they discover rhythm, melody, and the simple fun of making sounds together reminds me how natural music is to our souls. It’s joy in its purest form. Kids don’t worry if they’re “good enough” or if they’re “doing it right” — they just play, sing, and enjoy. And in that moment, I get to enjoy with them.

I also get to play in a band each week, and there is nothing like the connection of jamming with others. Music has this incredible way of weaving people together, creating unity without a single word. It’s an experience of community, of belonging, and of shared creativity.

Music has been called the language of the soul, and I believe that’s true. It can express emotions too deep for words. It can lift us out of our heads and into our hearts. It can remind us of hope when life feels heavy. Think about it — someone can write a song in their own moment of struggle or joy, and that same song can resonate with thousands, even millions, of people around the world. That’s the power of music.

So I want to ask you:

  • How could you use music in your life right now?

  • What songs help shift your mood or perspective when you need it most?

  • How could music make your days lighter, brighter, or more meaningful?

I’d love to hear your thoughts — and your favorite songs. Because when we share music, we share a part of ourselves. And that kind of connection is something the world always needs more of.

5 Ways to Use Music for Hope

  1. Create a “mood-shift” playlist. Collect songs that always lift your spirits or calm your soul, and turn to them when you need a reset.

  2. Play an instrument or sing. You don’t have to be a professional — just express yourself. Playing or singing your feelings is one of the most healing ways to release what’s inside.

  3. Use music for meditation. Soft instrumental music, chanting, or nature-inspired sounds can quiet the mind and bring peace.

  4. Dance it out. Put on a song that moves you and let your body respond. Movement plus music is one of the fastest ways to release stress.

  5. Share music with others. Send a friend a song that made you think of them. Play music together. Go to a live concert. Music is connection, and connection brings hope.

With joy and music,
Julie Burningham
